Instant messaging

Instant messaging, or IM as it’s commonly referred to, is a form of text-based, real-time communication, that enables users to share digitally-based information such as text, audio, and video instantly with each other and monitor the availability of a list of users over a network of computers, such as the Internet.

It is considered as a type of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) which defines any communicative transaction that occurs through the use of two or more networked computers.

Computer-based messaging could date back to the early computing era. In the early days of messaging, people primarily interacted via desktop computers. Developed in the 1990s for personal chat and entertainment, instant messaging is rapidly becoming a de facto standard for instantaneous communications within the workplace. Instant messaging enables users to communicate effectively and efficiently with one another.

Across the business organizations, the benefits of the instant messaging technology and real-time communication have helped instant messaging to evolve from a tool used by normal users into communication tool among the employees in their organizations and an improving tool for the decision-making process.

Categories of Groupware

Workgroup software, more commonly known as groupware, helps individuals work in teams by sharing information. Groupware can be divided into three categories depending on the level of collaboration:

Communication can be thought of as unstructured interchange of information. Common communication types includes: discussion, action request, meeting announcement and reference documental, and are used to signal the intent and type of communication.

Conferencing refers to interactive work toward a shared goal. Brainstorming or voting are examples of this. Conferencing’s advantage over e-mail is that it allows many people to become involved, while e-mail is usually restricted to a small number of people.

Computer based conferencing is an increasingly popular business applications it enables the distributed or virtual business to operate when decision makers are geographically separated.

Co-ordination refers to complex interdependent work toward a shared goal. Coordination can be classified in two major categories: impersonal coordination and coordination by feedback.

Video conferencing system in history

Videoconferencing is a telecommunications medium that allows individuals or groups at different locations to transfer video and audio in real-time, face-to-face settings.

Simple analog videoconferences could be established as early as the invention of the television. In 1927, when Herbert Hoover was US Secretary of Commerce, he used a videoconference system in Washington to communicate with AT&T President Walter Gifford in New York.

This was a prototype system, but AT&T continued pursuing the idea developed the Picturephone in the 1950s and launched the commercial Picturephone product in 1970. It was a commercial failure, mostly due to poor picture quality and the lack of efficient video compression techniques.

In 1964 Bell Labs launched their first prototype of videoconferencing system. However, limited by the networks and other technology, videoconferencing system was brought into market only in 1980s with the development of codec protocol.

During the 1970s, some private videoconferencing links were set up by some very large organizations using analog technology.

Video conferencing saw advancement and development in the 1990s  due to many factors including technical advances in Internet Protocol (IP) and also more efficient video compression technologies that were developed, permitting desktop or PC-based video conferencing.

In 1991, IBM introduced the first PC—based video conferencing system, named PicTel. Although it was a black and white system, it was very inexpensive to use. It was the first dedicated systems, started to appear in the market as ISDN networks were expanding throughout the world.

The wireless internet is the network of radio-connected devices and servers using voice, information and other internet services.  Its origins and its services cover both the computer and telecommunications industries.

With the birth of the wireless internet, the telecommunications industry has definitely accelerated the access points to the internet.

*Wireless technology allows people to solve the problem of mobility, which in turn has huge implications. Secure Socket Layer (SSL)

The internet is a packet-switching network. This means that for two hosts to communicate, they must packetize their data and submit it to router with the destination address prepended to each packet.

Secure Socket Layer is used for protection of data in transit that encompasses all network services using TCP/IP to support typical tasks of communication between the clients and the servers.

It is enable client-server applications to communicate in a way that is designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering and message forgery.

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is an encryption technology that runs on top of TCP/IP and below application level protocols, such as HTTP. Secure Socket Layer uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data – a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message.

Digital Certificate is used for the authentication of web server to the client server. Authentication here means that the web server confirms that it is legitimate/genuine to the client server.

SSL ensures the security of data transported and routed though HTTP. Secure Socket Layer was originally developed by Netscape Communications Corp and RSA Data Security, Inc. and it first appeared in a Netscape Navigator in 1994.

E-Government

Electronic commerce has been defined broadly as the sharing of business information, maintaining of business relationships and conducting of business transactions by means of telecommunications networks.

This definition encompasses the activities of e-government as those of conducting the affairs of state on various levels and with the greatest rational involvement of citizenry.

Governments are embracing the internet to provide services to business (G2B) and citizens (C2C), as well as government to government (G2G), citizen to citizen (C2C), government to supplier (G2S) and government to employee (G2E). It is the use of information and communication technologies to support government function and services and to support citizens on their participation in political processes.

In year 2000 European Union Summit in Lisbon set ambitious goal of making Europe the world most competitive and dynamic knowledge based economy. It resulted in the eEurope Action plan to exploit the full potential of the Internet to promote a competitive economy.

It means office automation and internal management information systems and expert systems, as well as client-facing web sites. The objective is to make it easier to deal with local, regional and national governments by making services available electronically.

The benefits of e-Government are reduced costs through more efficient processes, the integration of disparate agencies systems, and improved service to citizens via the internet and other electronic channels. Efficiency in administration and providing broad access to information and transactional services to the citizenry are recognized as the primary concerns in the e-government.

Investment by government will also decrease the cost of doing business through simplification of procedures self-service systems and one stop shop for enterprises. The biggest beneficiaries here will be the small to medium enterprises, which are the backbone of the European economy.

Characteristic of internet communication

Consuming resources responding to change and generating offspring, the internet may not be alive in literally sense, but it displays characteristics that are certainly vibrant.

Internet communication, especially chats, instant massages or emails, presents several characteristics that minimize expose to other or being judged by others.

*The partners to the communication are invisible to one another, except for much less frequent use of video communication though webcam. Partners of interactions may remain totally anonymous and present themselves under a nickname.
