Multimedia Software Technologies: Hypermedia

Hypermedia is an acronym which combines the words ‘hypertext’ and ‘multimedia’. Hypermedia has its root in hypertext. It is an augmented hypertext because it incorporates multimedia.

Hypermedia is the electronic documents that contain multiple forms of media, including text, graphics, video, and so on.

Hypertext technology allows the reader to move from one location to another by following the links that connect the topic of interest, only that it is much easier and faster to browse through the electronic excerpts of hypertext documents that to would be with a paper-based book.

Multimedia, on the other hand, allows the use of information in other forms, such as graphics, pictures, sound, animation, video, etc.

Therefore, hypermedia usually defined as hypertext – non-sequential text – where the hypertext nodes may contain multimedia content.

It is a style of building system for information representation and management around a network of multimedia nodes connected together by typed links. It is basically a collection of nodes interconnected by links.

The nodes contain discreet blocks of information of text and graphics and other items such as digital image, animation sequences, sound, interactive video, computing programmes and even a design procedure.
