Tips for staying safe and secure online

The online world is no different from the physical world in terms of precautions one should take. Just like the psychical world, the online contains its share of predators, criminals and scam artist.

Online security is one of the top catch phrases these days, but hardly anybody knows what it means and worse, most home computer users think security only applies to corporations and online businesses.

The potential for mayhem and just plain disruption of people’s life doesn't just mean credit card fraud - it can mean having your identity stolen, your life disrupted and spending hours cleaning up after an online 'vandalism' attack.

Today online predators and criminals can access victims on the internet almost anywhere. Being prepare means knowing how to respond to inappropriate or shady contact.

*Update your anti-virus files and anti spyware software 
If don’t have anti-virus software with current virus definitions installed, it will leave the door wide open for security problems.

Make sure your operating system and web browser are set up properly, and update them regularly as well. 

*Install a 'Firewall' 
Install good firewall and antivirus protection system and update it religiously.

*Use secure sites 
Only give sensitive data such as credit cards, social security numbers and important passwords over a secure connection.

Never buy anything online from a company that does not have encryption technology and a good privacy policy.

*Change passwords often 
An easy way to protect sensitive data and email is to change passwords on a monthly basis, or even more often depending on how frequently using computers away from home.

 Change passwords at least once a month.Though not fool-proof, these security tips should help reduce your vulnerability and keep everybody safer online.

*Back up important files
Copy them onto another computer or a removable hard drive such as a flash memory stick.

*Protect your personal information 
Don’t give too much information. Don’t give away any bit of information that makes you feel uncomfortable. 

Be careful with home address and other contact information online. Refrain from telling people where you are at any specific time.

Be cautious about arranging meetings in person with online acquaintances. *Know with whom you’re dealing

*Take your time and resist any urge to ‘act now’ to keep your account open or take advantage of a special offer.

Never open an e-mail or attachment if you don’t recognize the sender’s email address. It could contain message or link to sites that deal with violent, disturbing or sexually explicit material.

There is also a chance it contains a virus that could infect your entire hard drove and destroy your computer.
