In 1959, Peter Drucker in his book, The Landmark of Tomorrow defined knowledge workers as high-level workers who apply theoretical and analytical knowledge, acquired through formal training, to develop products and services.
Knowledge workers are employed because of their knowledge of a subject matter, rather than ability to perform manual labor. They perform best when empowered to make the most of their deepest skills.
The match and cohesion of knowledge workers and workplaces allow achieving the synergetic effect on different organizational levels. Increasement of motivation, job satisfaction and steering of stress as well as their own and organization’s future will influence sustainability of organization performance and environment which is complex and dynamic.
There are three different approaches explaining what a knowledge worker is.
*Data driven approach: knowledge workers as all those who work in particular organizations or in particular sectors or institutions
*Job content approach: knowledge workers as people who do a certain type of job.
*The conceptual approach: explains the term from the point of view of employees’ importance for an organization and his style of work with knowledge
Knowledge workers are the key to organizational success, because traditional sources of competitive advantage, such as quality, technology and economies of scale are no longer enough in the knowledge driven economy. Sustainable competitive advantage now rests on skilled and motivated workforce.
