Security and reliability of e-commerce

There are numerous reports of websites and databases being hacked into, and security holes in software. Users consistently rank reliability and security as ‘very important’. Internet businesses lose billions of dollars each year because of slow or failed web services.

Anti-attack of e-commerce system: when an enterprise has carried out e-commerce, it will heavily rely on the e-commerce system, which in turn will determine the survival of the enterprise.

The security problems originated from the internet itself. The internet is a free and open world, which enables the global information exchange.

Many companies protect their network from unauthorized access by implementing a security program using perimeter protection devices, including the screening router and the secure gateway.

Cross-site scripting

The Cross Site scripting is one of the problems that have plagued a lot of websites. Cross site scripting or XSS, is a term for a category of security issues in which an attacker injects HTML tags or scripts into a target website.

Cross-site scripting vulnerabilities date back to 1996 during the early days of the World Wide Web. A time when e-commerce began to take off, the bubble days of Netscape, Yahoo and the obnoxious blink tag.

In December 1999, David Ross was working in security response for Internet Explorer at Microsoft. He was inspired by the work of Georgi Guninsky who was at the time finding flaws in Internet Explorers security model.

David demonstrated that web content could expose ‘Script Injection’ effectively by -passing the same security guarantees by passed by Georgi’s Internet Explorer code flaws, but where the fault seemed to exist on the server side instead of the client side Internet Explorer code.

Cross site scripting can be performed by passing scripts in form of:

*Cookies
*Query Strings
*Web application variable
*Session variables

A web page is vulnerable to cross site scripting if it dynamically generates document content and bases that content on user submitted date without first ‘sanitizing’ that data by removing any embedded HTML tags from it.

The essential E-commerce process is required for the successful operation and management of E-commerce activities.

One of the processes is access control and security. Access control is arguably the most fundamental and most pervasive security mechanism in use today. Access control shows up in virtually all systems and imposes great architectural and administrative challenges at all levels of enterprise computing.

E-commerce must establish mutual trust and secure access between the parties in an e-commerce transaction by authenticating users, authorizing access, and enforcing security features.

Access control controls should be used for the system and all system users should be required to make use of those controls.

For example, these processes establish that a customer and E-commerce site are who they say they are through user names and passwords, encryption keys, biometric controls or digital certificates and signatures.

In addition to determining whether a user has rights to use a resource, the access control system may constrain when and how the resource may be used.

The E-commerce site must then authorize access to only those parts of the site that an individual user needs to accomplish his or her particular transactions. Thus, individual usually will be given access to all resources of an E-commerce site except for others people’s accounts, restricted company data, and webmaster administration areas.

The password or other access control for each authorized user should be unique to that user.

Access control is only one aspect of a comprehensive computer security solution, but it is one of the most visible.
