n the digital era, software stands as the cornerstone of innovation, propelling economies and advancing sciences. Its evolution has been marked by profound shifts, revolutionizing how businesses operate and how individuals interact with technology.
Traditionally, organizations relied on custom-designed programs crafted by in-house professionals. However, a significant trend has emerged towards the adoption of off-the-shelf software packages from vendors. This shift is driven by cost-effectiveness and accessibility, as ready-made solutions cater to diverse needs efficiently.
Facilitating this transition are emerging development tools and languages, streamlining software creation and adapting to evolving environments. The advent of affordable, user-friendly application software and multipurpose suites for microcomputers has accelerated this trend, making software acquisition more economical than bespoke development.
Moreover, software packages now boast web-enabled networking capabilities and collaboration features, optimizing utility for users across the internet, intranets, and extranets. With the rise of application service providers, software can be easily downloaded, updated, and managed, fostering seamless integration into workflows.
Intelligent agents represent another leap forward, enabling software to execute tasks based on user instructions. From organizing emails to screening messages, these capabilities enhance efficiency and user experience.
These converging trends herald the dawn of fifth-generation software—powerful, multipurpose, and expert-assisted, with intuitive interfaces. Such software, equipped with natural language processing and graphical interfaces, empowers both end-users and IT professionals to enhance productivity and collaboration.
Simultaneously, the emergence of social software and media platforms has reshaped interactions in the digital realm. Blogs, wikis, social networks, and real-time chat systems foster collaboration and knowledge sharing, emphasizing the social nature of computer-mediated interactions.
However, alongside these advancements, concerns about software reliability and security have prompted calls for certification. High-profile failures in online banking and trading systems have underscored the need for rigorous standards to ensure software safety and usability.
Enterprises are also embracing cloud computing—a paradigm shift where computing resources are delivered as services over the internet. This model offers scalability, flexibility, and cost-efficiency, revolutionizing how data and applications are managed and accessed.
In conclusion, the evolution of software development mirrors the rapid evolution of technology and user needs. From off-the-shelf solutions to intelligent agents and cloud computing, each trend reshapes the software landscape, driving innovation and efficiency in the digital age. As society becomes increasingly reliant on software, ensuring its reliability and security remains paramount, marking a new era of certified and cloud-enabled solutions.
Evolution of Software Development: Trends and Transformations
A computer system comprises hardware and software components, aiming to offer a powerful computational tool. These systems play a crucial role across diverse domains, aiding us in numerous tasks. The prevalence of the internet has significantly bolstered the utilization of computers for information sharing and communication. Computer systems empower us to store, process, display, and transmit information. Even in a basic modern computer system, multiple programs are typically required to carry out various functions effectively.

System development programs
Early programmers wrote programs consisting entirely of binary CPU instructions, and there were no intermediaries, such as compilers, interpreters, programming languages and OS service.
As computers became more powerful, writing larger programs became possible, but these programs were to complex to develop without automated assistance.
System development programs help users develop information system programs and procedures and prepare user programs for computer processing.
Major development programs include:
*Programming Language Translator and Editors
*Programming tools
*Computer Aided Software Engineering

Database development
Database is defined as a self-describing collection of data that represents a model of an information domain.
The database development is a major project that an organization may undertake. There are many issues that must be addressed before the project commences.
It is define and organize the content, relationship and structure of the data needed to build a database, including any hyperlinks to data on Web pages.
A well designed database is based on a good understanding of the business process. The first step in the development of a database is to identify business and goals to be achieved by the new database.
Several methods can help the database designers to collect the needed information. This including interviews with key players and examine the company’s documents.
Many internal and external factors must be considered during the development lifecycle, including but not limited to historical and future information requirement, the diversity of the data consumer community, organizational integration requirements, security, cost, value, ownership performance, interface issues and data integrity.
Once the database is constructed, before the newly developed database can be used in the business process, it needs to be tested to see if the database is able to meet all the requirements.

Cost Savings on Training and Development
Developing information access and Web publishing applications for an intranet is a lot easier than many traditional methods.
It involved self directed, self paced instruction and nonlinear learning; employees can review the material largely in any order they want.
It is more convenient than classroom training.
Learning how to use Web browser from the company Intranet is fast and easy. Many employees already know how to use browser anyway, from surfing the World Wide Web.
Driven by cost, travel and times savings, online leaning alone is a strong alternative strategy. Extranets typically do not generate revenue, but rather they provide organization with the opportunity to reduce costs. Some of the potential cost savings for the organization can be estimated in term of reduced paper costs and improved process efficiencies.
So training and development costs for many intranet applications are low, especially for communication, collaboration and information sharing.
In addition, putting electronic version of training materials on intranet websites can reduce the amount of costly classroom training in business.
If the training is implemented correctly the costs associated with training can be cut by more than half. Many companies that have technology learning system at each branch office or within reach of each employee have enjoyed significant savings in travel costs.

Software development and trends

Software is the essential enabler for the new economy and science. It creates new markets and new directions for a more reliable.
There has been a major trend away from custom designed programs develop by the professional programmers of the organization. Instead, the trend is toward the use of off-the-shelf software packages acquired by end users from software vendors.
Many new development tools and languages heave emerged to enable more simplified software development or to meet the software requirements of new environment.
The trend dramatically increased with the development of relatively inexpensive and easy to use application software package and multipurpose software suites for microcomputer.
It is often more cost effective to buy software rather than develop it from the ground up.
The trend has accelerated, as software package are designed with Web-enabled networking capabilities and collaboration features that optimize their usefulness for end users and workgroups on the internet and corporate intranets and extranets.
Also many software packages can now be downloaded, update, managed, and rented or leased from software companies or application service providers over the internet and corporate intranets.
Other software packages use capabilities called intelligent agents to perform activities based in instructions from a user. For example, some electronic mail packages can use an intelligent agent capability to organize, send, and screen E-mail messages.
These major trends seem to be converging to produce a fifth generation of powerful, multipurpose, expert-assisted and web-enabled software packages with natural language and graphical interfaces to support the productivity and collaboration of both end users and IS professionals.
Over the last seven to eight years, new tools and practices have emerged which emphasize the social nature of computer mediated interactions. Commonly labeled as social software and social media, they encompassed applications such as blogs and microblogs, wikis, social networking sites real time chat system and collaborative classifications systems.
Three or four years ago, there was a trend in software certification, driven in some cases by public’s dissatisfaction with the frailty of software based system.
Online banking and trading systems have experience failures and that were widely publicized and have cause wide-spread chaos. Security breaches in software systems have disrupted people’s lives,. There is no reason that software system should no bet certified as fit for use and safe.
New technology emerged with computing is being transferred by a new model, cloud computing. In this model data and computation are operated somewhere in a ‘cloud’ owned and maintained by a third party. Cloud computing is the hardware systems software, and application delivered as services over the internet.
